Last week i managed to get TWO (count 'em TWO) slideshow's up!! Can you believe it? i can hardly believe it myself. If you missed them, you can see the Trip to Tripoli slideshow here and the String Theory v.IV: Creative Genesis (Guest post by Sue Jacobs) slideshow here! it's a work in progress, and i appreciate all of your patience! There are a few exciting things coming up for this challenge... i don't want to give anything away, just want to BUILD the excitement!! WOO!! is it building? good. There's a new feature in the works, as well as maybe /possibly a giveaway... who knows.... oooh, i can just TASTE the anticipation... tastes like candy. mmm. candy.
Can you believe that this is the last Monday of August? i mean, CAN YOU?? Somehow the summer has just slipped by, but we're doing the best we can to cram in some fun times. My grandmother happened to be in town this week for her 75th birthday. She's 75, my Mom is 53 and i'm 31...and Chewie is 3...,
so Grandma, Mom, the boys and I went to the zoo Monday afternoon. (Please note, when i say ZOO in Saskatchewan, i should mention it's the Zoo at the Forestry Farm, so it's animals like Deer, and Elk, and Cariboo, and Bison - while they do have two lions and a monkey house, the focus is on Prairie type animals). I've lived in Saskatchewan for 16 years or so, give or take, and i've never been to the zoo here before. It was pretty fun, but super hot out. Chewie liked riding the train and feeding the deer with great grandma. Artoo mostly slept.

Forestry Farm Fun |
As much as Chewie really wanted to stay up for the Fun Day fireworks, we managed to convince him to finish off the night with some ice cream - and head home. I put him to bed last night and he held my hand as he fell asleep - exhausted from his big day. sigh. it made me get all teary thinking that he won't want me to hold him like that for too much longer. aw.
Okay, enough of the mush - if you've made it this far, congratulations! let's get on with the THIRTY-SEVENTH weekly challenge!!
Weekly Challenge #37: "Kiss my Grids"
i have to give B-rad props because i was originally going to call this challenge "off the grid" but he said: "you should call it kiss my grids!" and so i did.
It brings back fond memories of that sitcom from the 70s about the Diner... what was that called? there was Mel the cook, and i think Alice... and that red-head Flo who's signature line was, "Mel, Kiss my grits." My brothers and i used to watch that show in syndication back in the 80s. we had no idea what grits were, but we loved Flo. (Come to think of it, i'm still not sure what grits are... perhaps one of you out there can enlightened my niave Canadian self?)
So the challenge is to use all Grid based tangles in your tile or Zentangle Inspired Art. And there's a whole bunch of 'em.
To do mine, i drew my string and then with my Micron i drew a grid across the entire tile - and chose two different grid based tangles to fill in the gaps.

If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! (if you don't know how to find this, you can see my half assed tutorial here)
Also, please feel free to come back often and visit the links of those people on the linkey machine - don't forget to leave a comment or feedback, everyone loves feedback. ;)
If you don't have a blog but still want to participate, you can email your tile to me and i will post it here. (See the contact tab above for my email address)
The deadline for each weekly challenge is Saturday night so that i can round everyone up by Sunday. What this means is that i will stop adding tiles to the slideshow on Sunday. You're still more than welcome to do the challenges and add your name to the linkey machine.
I will be more diligent with the linkey machine - by editing out the ones that don't work, the doubles, the links that lead to nowhere, the links that go just to blog home pages (this is why we need those site specific urls), and the spam. And there is some spam. :(
Another fun challenge, Laura. Looking forward to what you have up your sleeve:)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try this one. I love the idea of restricting the number of tangles to 2. Oh, the sweet symetry.
ReplyDeleteGrits are ground up corn that are cooked up sort of like oatmeal. Only with corn. You might look in the grocery store next to the packets of instant oatmeal, because there are instant grits as well. I kinda like them, but not everyone does. I think the TV show you are talking about was called 'Alice' with Linda Lavin, based off the movie 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore'. Aren't I just the little encyclopedia this morning?!
ReplyDeleteThat sit com was called: Alice. I haven't thought about that show in a long time but I do remember that phrase. So perfect for this week's challenge.
ReplyDeleteSo awesome that you are able to be with your mother and grandmother. Have a great week.
What a nice time you all had at Community Fun Day! Sounds like life is settling in a bit for you, Laura. Ahhhhh. The joy family.
ReplyDeleteOh, such TV memories you have unearthed! The program called "Alice" was based at Mel's Diner (which was situated in Phoenix, AZ). Flo, Alice and Vera were the wait-persons..... and, of course, Mel Sharples was the cook. Vera was the ditzy one........... sooooo funny. She was my favorite.
.... and grits? That's a kind of cornmeal... made from (you guessed it!)... corn flour/meal! lol (... and the Italian version is polenta...)

ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to this challenge!
I remember "Alice" too. Loved that waitress, Flo. She didn't take any crap from anyone. I liked the owner of the Mel's Diner, too. He was quite a charactor and I thought of that show too when I first saw the title of this week's challenge. How Funny!
ReplyDeleteI can't stand the taste of Grits nor Oatmeal. I use to get spankings for not eating my oatmeal and then one morning my Mom decided to cook me fried eggs like she did for herself, but gave my sibling oatmeal which they ate, since they liked oatmeal and non of them complained.
My Mom finally answered my wishes! She didn't have any problems with getting me to eat other foods. I liked just about everything except for oatmeal or grits.
Can you guys believe I love Oatmeal Cookies, though? Much as I hate oatmeal as a hot cereal, I will "tear up" on some baked breads with raw oats in the bread, granola (which has oatmeal in it) and Oatmeal cookies (which is one of my favorites as cookies especially freshly baked!
The TV show "Alice" brings back memories. I remembered Flo, the waitress with the funny southern accent and didn't take any crap from anyone, the short dark haired waitress and the medium height pretty waitress (one of those waitresses name is Alice, but I can remembered if it was the short dark haired one or the medium height pretty one) and the owner of Mel's Diner the most. What a charactor he was.
ReplyDeleteOK- to clarify- "grits" are made from corn, but NOT "corn meal/corn flour" but ground "hominy" which is apparently the "dried kernel of the corn after the hull & germ have been removed"
ReplyDeleteThis prepared "hominy" is then ground, preferably stone-ground, fairly coarse.
Now you can mix the grits with water and cook as you would oatmeal or cream of wheat. Season and serve in the same fashion: with butter and salt, with sugar or syrup, whatever, usually as breakfast cereal or side dish.
BUT
(I never really liked grits until I met them again in Charleston, SC a few years ago)
Charleston-style grits are the divine ambrosia of the grit-world. Cooked very long and slowly with lots of butter and cream, and served as a side dish with almost anything. Especially good with a nice spicy shrimp!
I think summer almost past is hard to imagine, however, the flies are telling me it is true. It looks like so much fun there in Canada. I wish I could experience that beauty personally. Thanks for the challenge. Sometimes I lose myself in my tangling and I think this first piece is an example. It was fun even though it is sort of a monster.
ReplyDeleteLove your tile! Off to start mine now. Also love grits...then again, I'm from the south, so I think that's a requirement.
ReplyDeleteSo nice you had time to spend with your family. It does seem like the summer just flew by.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this challenge. I love grids. Grits....eh. But I do remember Alice, Flo, Mel and the gang.
Good memories for a lovely day and good times. I must try grits, love oatmeal!
ReplyDeleteLike the way cubine is peeping out of Puff. Simple and neat.
ReplyDeleteI love how your tile looks 3 dimensional. Nice job! Cari
ReplyDeleteI even posted a fantastic recipe with mine! Know I had to be converted to grits! Still working on being converted to grids.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great challenge title...I immediately thought of "Alice". I tend to be drawn toward grid-based patterns, so I really enjoyed this challenge.
ReplyDeleteFun, fun, fun!!! - Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun challenge! And, that ice cream cone looks awfully yummy!! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge! Now I want Grits!
ReplyDeleteLove your griddy/gritty tile. I am drawn toward grid based tangles too, so this week's challenge was a real pleasure...........and great job on the slide shows!
ReplyDeleteFun, fun, fun!
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge! And loved reading all the definitions of Grits!!! I think Maggiekat got it right...individual tastes...I love oatmeal and hate grits...go figure!!!
ReplyDeleteFun challenge, and I love grits, not so much grids but it was a good challenge.
ReplyDeleteThanks for continuing to come up with such great challenges! As a newbie, I'm intrigued by the possibilities and overwhelmed with all the talent out there.
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge. If link says my site is non-existent, please click anyway because the link does work. Lovely work from all you tanglers as usual! x
ReplyDeleteIt's so fun to read about your family's adventures. Your challenge this week provided a wonderfully fun evening for my friend Jean and me. She just got home from having knee replacement surgery, and we had dinner and did the challenge together. Hooray!
ReplyDeleteOK, So I missed the part where it said "only TWO tangles". Sorry, my bad.
ReplyDeleteI don't see "only two" in the instructions : )
ReplyDeleteThanks, Laura! Another good challenge!
ReplyDeleteI love grids - thanks even though I'm really really late it was still a fun challenge. thanks
ReplyDeleteHey tanglers,.....Laura only posts two but you can make as many as you want of the challenge. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteOK. I'm a week behind, but I've been wanting to do a gridded tangle for a while. Thanks for the encouragement I needed for this exercise!
ReplyDeletewhoops - posted the paradox tile in this feed... I'm new at this! Sorry about that :)
ReplyDelete(I also posted it in the right feed, so hopefully that makes up for my mistake!)
I love grid patterns, so I drew a large grid and then put a different gris pattern in each square. Fun!
