We had quite a week of weather... after talking about how we were having nice spring weather last week - on Monday we had some wintery weather again. Freezing rain, accompanied by a power outtage. The power was out from 10:45am until like 6 or 7 at night, which was no fun as the day got colder and colder... by the end of the night, i ended up driving the boys around in the van because our house was cold. How fun. It was an adventure - as we drove around the city the roads and driving conditions got worse and worse... oh man. good times.... we're good now, though. Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away and all that.
Before we get to the challenge - here's something really cool....
Golden Spiral: Paradox - by B-rad |
The Spiral he used is called the Golden Spiral, and is the spiral found naturally in nature. He's a big fan of Geometry and Mathematics... he felt to do the challenge justice he had to make sure his string was geometrically accurate. The Golden Spiral is infinite, both inwards and outwards.
Weekly Challenge #64: String Theory v. VIII "Fortuneteller"
So, as is the case with all the String Theory challenges, the challenge here is for everyone to use a common string in their work. For this, i simply divided my tile into 4, then divided them again, through the diagonals, creating 8 special-right triangles. (Each triangle has a 90 degree and two 45 degree angles)
I called this challenge the Fortuneteller, because the string reminds me of those paper fortune teller i used to make as a kid.
10 year old Laura: "Will Jason D and I fall in love and get married? "RED" R-E-D...." |
The first few triangles i tangled inside were tricky, i found it hard to work in the confines of such a geometric space.
But as i continued working through each space on my tile, and as i tried to blur the lines of my 'string', it got pretty fun...
So again, the challenge is to use the string pictured above. Let's see how we all interpret the elegance of limitations.
If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! (if you don't know how to find this, you can see my half assed tutorial here)
Also, please feel free to come back often and visit the links of those people on the linkey machine - don't forget to leave a comment or feedback, everyone loves feedback. ;)
If you don't have a blog but still want to participate, you can email your tile to me and i will post it here. (See the contact tab above for my email address). The deadline for each weekly challenge is Saturday night so that i can round everyone up by Sunday. What this means is that i will stop adding tiles to the slideshow on Sunday. You're still more than welcome to do the challenges and add your name to the linkey machine.
I will be more diligent with the linkey machine - by editing out the ones that don't work, the doubles, the links that lead to nowhere, the links that go just to blog home pages (this is why we need those site specific urls), and the spam. And there is some spam. PLEASE do not put your *home* page in the linkey machine... please? for me??
ILOVE B-Rad's spiral.....a keeper/framer for sure. Glad to know he's also enjoying the bennies of tangling.
ReplyDeleteAs time goes on, we are hearing of more and more of these benefits. Maybe they are all the same, just come out sounding different depending on who's benefitting.....sort of like a Zentangle.....
So I have decided that Zentangle maybe just makes life better. Everyone feels it differently.
This is way to much thinking for a Monday morning....gotta get to work. m
Wow, Brad's spiral is really beautiful. I had just visited Shelly Beauchamp's blog where she has a 'spiral guide' that is just delicious, and then came upon this! What an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI love Brad's, I love yours, I don't much like mine but I am going to figure out a way to do one I like...stay tuned!
ReplyDeleteI thought Brad's spiral was stunning and well done. I even thought about copying it. LOL! Anyway, I enjoyed this one a lot. Thanks so much Laura.
ReplyDeleteMel
Brad's spiral is awesome. Thanks for the great inspirations for these challenges. I love getting up early on Monday just to see what's next!
ReplyDeleteLaura, I love Brad's spiral, one never gets tired of looking at paradox, it keeps changing and takes on new expressions with each person's interpretation and style. Thank you for this challenge, it's been a while for me and I really missed it.
ReplyDeletethis was fun for me.....I learned a couple of new tangles because I wanted a grid to work with.
ReplyDeleteAw Brad, so good to see you getting some fun with Zentangles....and what a fab job you did on it....love the spiral and paradox together...you make it look easy (I have so much trouble getting paradox into anything but a straight triangle)!!!
Brad's spiral is beautiful and so perfect! I like the string theory you chose this time for this Chalenge. I think I remember using strings in this arrangements on one of the silk scarves I did for my relative for Christmas in 2010.
ReplyDeleteThis was tough for me. I much more prefer the sweeping curves and awesome spirals like Brad and Shelly have come up with.
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge this week. I made two and suspect I'll be trying a few more.
ReplyDeleteThis was a fun challenge this week.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Maria, love B-rad's tangle. Simply lovely.
ReplyDeleteHere's my first try at this week's Challenge - hope you enjoy the story behind it! B-rad's tangle inspires me to try this one again...and again...and again! Thanks, Laura and B-rad!
ReplyDeleteThank you for another great challenge. Awesome spiral, and your tile turned out so nice too! Thanks again! :)
ReplyDeleteThis wil be a fun one!! And I love B-Rad's spiral!! When I first saw it, I thought it was going to be this week's challenge...and thought "Oh, love this one!"
ReplyDeleteThe linky machine just ate my URL. I think I did it right... guess we'll see. Thanks for the fun challenge :o) This is my first and I look forward to many more!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great, fun challenge. And B-rad's paradox spiral is fabulous! Hope your weather gets better. We've been having unseasonably warm weather in the Baltimore/Washington DC area.
ReplyDeleteMy first time here. I arrived via Bilja's blog. Off to see what everyone's done :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun challenge, like I was back in class with a finite defined string! Everyone's interpretations are wonderful. Diana
ReplyDeleteI am in love with B-rad's creation. The golden spiral is such a beautiful piece of nature. My contribution this week, on the other hand... bleah. Oh well, we can't be happy with the all! :)
ReplyDeleteLaura, I really enjoyed this weeks challenge, thank you.
ReplyDeleteLove this challenge, thanks for making this possible!
ReplyDeleteOhhh. This was tricky for me. Thanks for the challenge :)
ReplyDeleteOooh! This was fun! Thanks for the challenge!
ReplyDeleteSuper spiral B-rad!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE the spiral! And fun challenge! As I noted in my blog post with this week's tile, this appears to be a favorite string of mine, although this week's challenge forced me to do it on a tile this time. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow, I loved this challenge thank you all for the wonderful comments on my blog :)
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge and great tangled spiral B-rad!!
ReplyDeleteOne week I am delighted to join your challenge. I learn a lot and also have fun.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
Hi ! This is my first time participating - I'm very new at tangling. This challenge I felt I was up to. Great and motivating idea with a weekly challenge - thank you!
ReplyDeleteLoved this challenge. Didn't have space on my schedule to give it the time and attention it deserves and am looking forward to playing more with the concept later!
ReplyDeleteThis was fun, allthough I was not satisfied with my technical drawing today, I should have worn my glasses ;6, I love how it came out, pretty much like a fortuneteller paper. By the way we call this in Germany "haven and hell" game ^^. I love the "flow out of the middle", and how I kicked the strange deviding lines away :) Happy tangeling to you all!
ReplyDeleteLove B-rad's spiral! Thanks for sharing with us and for another great challenge.
ReplyDeleteI love the golden ratio spiral! I didn't like this challenge at first, but my embroidery inspired me to give it a try.
ReplyDeleteJust posted my first Diva Challenge! It's really interesting to go through the other posts and see what people have done with the same string.
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge but know that I've gone back to look at the others - really took it in a different direction- but hey that's OK it's Zentangle. Off to see a few more entries.
ReplyDeleteLots going on at the moment but I have my art work that I did last November and that is just right for this challenge.
ReplyDeleteHad SO much fun with this challenge and finally got caught up on my blog entries. Love B-rad's Golden Spiral. Inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThought I'd try this one again. As always, thanks for the Challenges, Laura!
ReplyDelete<3 Weekly Challenges, thanks so much for the inspiration every week. It has been great for stress relief because I really need it.
ReplyDeleteBoth drawings are great! That is very cool that B-rad tangles with you :)
ReplyDeleteGreat spiral, B-rad!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Laura.
I was so excited to enter my first tangle. I look forward to many more!
ReplyDeleteI've just entered my first tangle too and have started my first blog too. I'm looking forward to having a go at your next weekly challenge.
