Chewie, my dear boy, turned 4 on Thursday - and it's been a week of getting things organized for his birthday party, which is Spiderman themed. He also out of the blue decided that he really really really really wanted a Spiderman pinata. Well, you'd think with the new Spiderman movie out this summer there'd be such a thing....
We found red and blue plates, and some Spiderman napkins, table cloth, and balloons. I even made him a "Pin the Spidey on the Web Game" to play with his cousins at his party....

Cute. |
- but there were no pinatas! Not even the specialty party store had any.

What's a girl to do when her son is so freakin' cute - and all he really wants is a Spiderman pinata? why, make one - of course.
So most of this week has been spent paper macheing a Spiderman head pinata for my dear sweet boy.

Chewie helping me paint the pinata |
i like him. i'm quite proud. This week has scored me one bazillion mom points which don't really count since HE'LL NEVER APPRECIATE ME!! WAHH!!! lol.... i'm just kidding. while we were painting Spidey's head, he looked up at me and smiled and said: "I love you, mom." Payment received, boy-o.
Also - in other family news: We are heading to Philadelphia for a week this Thursday to go to a medical conference for Moebius Syndrome, which is Artoo's medical condition. So next week's challenge will be a guest post by a fellow Certified Zentangle Teacher, but you'll have to come back next week to find out who! :D
Weekly Challenge #78: "New Official Tangle: Auraknot"
Last week Rick and Maria introduced a new tangle in their newsletter with an added challenge to break down the steps and to name the tangle. Well, this week - they've come up with a winner. From their blog:
Congrats to Mattie Arnold who came up with the name auraknot. As an added bonus, they've also created a great instructional video:
Congrats also to Jeanne Kero, CZT, who came up with the "step-out." (← click this link for instructions - Laura)
I love that this tangle is based on two of the most essential Zentangling techniques: Auras and Hollibough.
as soon as i saw how this tangle was done, i knew immediately that it would be right up B-rad's alley... so i said to him: "I want you to try this tangle, i think you'll really like it." So, we sat together after the kiddos were in bed, drinking beers and listening to great records, snacking on chips and salsa... tangling together. it was awesome. something we don't get much of a chance to do together.
anyway, here's a bombardment of tiles done by yours truly and b-rad, using the new tangle auraknot:

If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! (if you don't know how to find this, you can see my half assed tutorial here)
Also, please feel free to come back often and visit the links of those people on the linkey machine - don't forget to leave a comment or feedback, everyone loves feedback. ;)
If you don't have a blog but still want to participate, you can email your tile to me and i will post it here. (See the contact tab above for my email address). The deadline for each weekly challenge is Saturday night so that i can round everyone up by Sunday. What this means is that i will stop adding tiles to the slideshow on Sunday. You're still more than welcome to do the challenges and add your name to the linkey machine.
Hey - i should note here quickly that i try my best to get the slideshows up in a timely fashion, but sometimes my life gets in the way (like when Artoo spends a week in the hospital, just for example) so, please be patient. thanks. HUG
I will be more diligent with the linkey machine - by editing out the ones that don't work, the doubles, the links that lead to nowhere, the links that go just to blog home pages (this is why we need those site specific urls), and the spam. And there is some spam. PLEASE do not put your *home* page in the linkey machine... please? for me??
Love this Challenge!
ReplyDeleteI already expected this new tangle for the challenge.
You did a great job with Auraknot Laura !
Great Auraknots and very cool spiderman piñata! Ya-know I have the same trouble with Mooka. I practice it and practice it all the time and still I don't get that tangle to turn out the way I would like. I just hope if I practice enough one day it will just be what I'm looking for.
ReplyDeleteI also expected it to be this week's challenge. I made four samples in my A5 sketchbook, it was so much fun.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to get familiar with auraknot! Weebly is being slow today so if it doesn't load right away come back later. I am sure you will have a wonderful time at the conference. Information and support in health issues always gives you a boost. Thank you for sharing your fun project with Chewie. You are a super mom!
ReplyDeleteI adore your Spidey piñata! Wonderful job! Reminds me of some of the hours of labor I put into making my son halloween costumes way back!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit, my auraknot ZIA was done over the weekend, the moment I saw the videos. And my partner and I too just had to have some 'downtime' and tangle like crazy. I may eventually add it to my blog, but since I'm moving my blog to a new domain and I'm still not entirely done, I've posted it to my flickr acct.

Your Auraknots are fab!!Great job with the Pinata :))
ReplyDeleteFirst of all congrats on your pinata!! It is great!! Secondly, you have really set the bar high with your examples!! All of them are great!! And last of all...enjoy Philadelphia...I hope you have a chance to so some "sight seeing" in this remarkable city...I just read an article about the grand opening of the new Barnes Art Gallery...I can't wait to visit it!! Then, there is all the historical stuff...the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, etc!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge Laura! And cool piñata! I just made an American flag piñata for Independence Day. It was more challenging than I thought but still really cool. I love your Spiderman version. As usual, Chewie is adorable!
ReplyDeleteCool Pinata! I need to practice the tangle before I do any tiles for this challenge.. I really am not fond of Hollibaugh... :-/
ReplyDeleteI loved the video, very well explained, but I'm still not sure about how well I have it in my head yet.
ReplyDeletelol, that spidey pinata is cool....too bad it has to be smashed. you guys rocked on those Auraknot tiles, well done to you both.
I was totally anticipating an Auraknot challenge this week! Thanks as always for the challenge. I had fun, and I just love Auraknot. Thanks for sharing about Artoo and Chewie as well - with a little brother in the house, I know how cute kids can be! Hope things go well at the conference!
ReplyDeleteLove all of your Auraknots. I also had made a bunch of them this weekend, but did an entirely new one just for your challenge! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteAwesome tiles! Awesome Spidy! Awesome Mom!
ReplyDeleteWow, your spidey pinata turned out really cool! Your young man sure is a lucky fella! I remember when my son was little we tried to do special things for him on his birthday, and it was fun, and I hope in the years to come he will look back on them with a smile. Great job on your AuraKnots... I'm starting to get the hang of it, but I need a little more practice. Thanks so much for the challenge. :)
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful work by everyone. Can't wait to see them all.http://jessicasporn.blogspot.com/2012/07/who-are-you-not-to-be-fabulous.html
ReplyDeleteYour Auraknots are great, Laura! You are an awesome Mom....great pinata!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this week's challenge, Laura! Definitely a fun one - this tangle can steal hours from me! Awesome spidey-fun for you & the boys!
ReplyDeleteGreat tangles, Laura and B-rad!
ReplyDeleteHope you have an enjoyable time at the conference in Philadelphia. Your beautiful children are getting so big.
You're a great mommy! This tangle looks really hard, but I haven't done anything artistic for a while, so I'm gonna give it a shot! Love all of the versions you and B-rad came up with! :D
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this weeks challenge = I have missed the last two (School holidays need I say more) also just letting you know that I have nominated your blog for a Kreativ Blog Award - you can check it out on my page. - Cheers Tania
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday Chewie!
ReplyDeleteStunning auraknots Laura and B-rad!
not as difficult as it looks, love it!
ReplyDeleteLoved the challenge, too!!! Thank you very much! And your Zendala is so beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the challenge, as a new tangler I'm looking for ideas/inspiration everywhere. Your site (and those of the people who contribute) is wonderful and I'm sure I'll be back soon.
ReplyDeletethanks for the challenge, as ever!
ReplyDeleteYesterday, I started to doodle on a piece of my Rhodia DotPad.. I started with the little figure down in the corner. A one-dimensional swimmer. I proceeded, mindlessly on, to do three more, getting progressively larger as I went. I let it sit there all night just trying to think what to do with them. What was I thinking? How did I get here?? So, I happened to check out the Zentangle page and saw the new Diva Challenge. It hit me then. Put those little ladies right smack in the center of that Auraknot. So here they are. Syncronized swimmers in an Auraknot.
ReplyDeleteOk, so it wasn't my best ever. LOL!!
I love your piñata. My kids would have had something else. You and B-rad rock. Y'all did a great job playing with auraknot.
ReplyDeleteThis was fun, and I posted it on my brand spanking new blog!
ReplyDeleteLaura, your birthday Spiderman pinata is fabulous! What a lucky Chewie! And Happy birthday Chewie! The tangles you and B-Rad did are all interesting. What fun to do them together. Congrats on your latest award. You deserve it for all the pleasure you give to use all.
ReplyDeleteLaura, thank you for this challenge, although I've had no end of trouble with it! Am I bad for saying I'm not all that fond of Auraknot? I've seen some really beautiful work by everybody else, and I'm fairly pleased with my own effort (in the end LOL!), but I'm finding this tangle a bit too geometric and I may not do it often.....but then again who knows - it may grow on me!
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed very much while doing this tangle for the challenge. Hope to participate in many more of these. Thanks for encouraging people like me :)
ReplyDeleteWow! Great response this week. I posted mine in Tuesday, and there were already 59 posts ahead of me. I better get going if I'm going to look at all of them. I'm so glad you do this for us, Diva. And you and B-rad did a great job with this tangle.
ReplyDeleteOoops! Forgot to leave a comment after I submitted my tangles yesterday. I love AuraKnot. I even did a curvy version for the challenge.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fun tangle lots of potential. 31 Days until Providence! Love the pinata and your adorable boys.
ReplyDeleteJanet
Love all the pics and LOVE all your examples of this, my latest favorite tangle pattern. Thanks, as always, to The Diva for giving us a fun weekly deadline!
ReplyDeleteLove what you and B-rad did. Love your auraknot with mooka. Very nice.

ReplyDeleteLaura, sorry, I posted my first attempt to my blog homepage, I just started my blog a few days ago, so I didn't know how to link properly. So, I linked again with site specific url. Thanks and sorry!!
ReplyDeleteLove this new tangle, and love your challenges!
