Hello everyone!
I just can't believe how fast November has flown by.  For some reason, i just have had such a hard time keeping track of the date this month.   I thought it was the first week of November for the first three weeks of the month!  lol

In my crazy busy life, i try to make some time for some art - and i actually managed to make a little this week.
My mug and a portrait in my journal
Artoo is still battling his cough, and now Chewie is coughing in earnest as well.  To be fair, Chewie was coughing before, but it seems pretty intense now.  I'm just hoping that this is the same cough that's been going around, there's not much we can do but wait.

Artoo "enjoying" a steam in the bathroom
Artoo saw the Respiratory specialist this week, he was pretty upset that it had taken us this long to get a referral to him.  He seems really nice, and even though we have some 'work' in our future - i think i'm cautiously optimistic that, with his help, we'll be able to get Artoo's respiratory system back on track.  Hooray!

Chewie had a great time at his Zumba class - I love watching him do the steps and the moves but the best part, though, is that it's just me and him.  He gets me all to himself, and i cheer and clap as they dance.  it's so cute.

at the end of class, Chewie's teacher gave him a Zumba bracelet! he's so proud.

also, this week i took my beautiful niece to see the last Twilight movie.

We've seen every movie together since she was 11, she's now 15.  It was fun! We saw the show, had some frozen yogurt, had some girl talk, and tried on Neon Pink 'Fur' Coats in the mall - it was a good time.  :)
After the movie, she mentioned that she didn't know what she was going to do with the rest of her life now that Twilight was finally over.  I laughed.  She's funny.
Weekly Challenge #97: String Theory v. XX -"No Strings Attached"
I find strings to be tricky. It's one of the most challenging parts of creating a tile...for me.  Sometimes when i just want to turn off my brain i randomly choose tangles, but i'm right back to being stumped cuz i still need a string to put them in.

Or do i??

I've been playing around with doing tiles without a string, lately.  Here's an example that i did in my art journal, i had this photo of this 1920s nude and didn't know what to do with it, so i tangled around it.

I've found that working without a string can be both freeing, and frustrating - freeing because i don't have to 'come up' with a string, and frustrating because how do i then divide up my tile?

So, how DO you divide up your tile then?  Well, pretty much any way you feel like - but here are a few ways that have worked for me.

Start in one spot, on the edge of the tile, and work your way out building tangles off of tangles - or use tangles to divide your tile - like hollibough or crescent moon.  Or begin in the center and work your way out, which works AWESOME as a Zendala - or some other awesome way i haven't thought of.

So try your hand at it this week - Creating a tile, zendala, or ZIA without using a string.  How does the lack of string make you feel? are you blissfully free? Or are you blocked? Or a mixture of both.
If you have a blog, add the site-specific URL where your tile is posted to the linkey machine below! Don't forget to link back here so that others can join in the fun! (if you don't know how to find this, you can see my half assed tutorial here)

Also,  please feel free to come back often and visit the links of those people on the linkey machine - don't forget to leave a comment or feedback, everyone loves feedback. ;)

If you don't have a blog but still want to participate, you can email your tile to me and i will post it here. (See the contact tab above for my email address).  The deadline for each weekly challenge is Saturday night so that i can round everyone up by Sunday. What this means is that i will stop adding tiles to the slideshow on Sunday. You're still more than welcome to do the challenges and add your name to the linkey machine.
I will be more diligent with the linkey machine - by editing out the ones that don't work, the doubles, the links that lead to nowhere, the links that go just to blog home pages (this is why we need those site specific urls), and the spam. And there is some spam.  PLEASE do not put your *home* page in the linkey machine... please? for me??

  1. Hey Laura, Hope Artoo and Chewiee get better soon...:) Love those tangles around the Nude Lady....

    1. Thanks Tink! I hope the boys get better soon, too...
Thanks for your comment about the nude. i think it turned out rather well.

  2. Laura, I love the challenge...thank you for an easy week....sometimes it is great to just tangle! It looks like you had fun with your niece! Twilight...where I live it is extraordinarily well loved! I so pray that the respiratory therapist will give your family the gift of good health for Artoo. Your tiles are extraordinary-ly beautiful!

  3. Hey Laura, Thanks for another lovely challenge. Hope kids recover soon
    Great portrait and lovely tangles!!
100th challenge just round the corner!! WOW

  4. Yes! 100 Challenges, can you believe it? What do i have in store for my 100th Challenge? Better wait and see. ;)

    1. Oooooooh there's a point!! 100 challenges deserves a celebration :)

  5. Nice Challenge. Glad that I was able to post again. Thought it would be after the holidays. Hope that your family is feeling better soon.

  6. Great idea! Thanks. I LOOOve your "nude with tangles". Very effective. What fun your cousin is! Do you good to go out and enjoy yourself.

  7. Your tile is super and I love the name for this challenge...thanks Laura!

  8. Nice challenge, thanks. Like coming home. But I have to say that though a string can be a help, it isn't necessary to stick to it slavishly. Those faint pencil lines are not a rule of law, but a starting point. If the patterns take over and win a victory over those faint lines, I'm sure that's really what this is all about. Life has so many rules and regulations it's not advisable to break. It's nice to have one or two you can break legally.
This is one reason the "blind" string works so well. You give yourself "guidelines" without knowing what they are!

  9. Hi Laura, thanks for this week's challenge - Your tile is gorgeous and I just love your tangled photo! I hope the boys feel much better real soon :)

  10. Laura, Loved seeing all of your art this week! The sketch of the girl, the nude ZIA, and your tile are all wonderful! Hugs to you and your little guys. :)

    1. Hi Laura, I noticed I had two typo's in my message, so I decided to delete it and resend a corrected message. I would hate it if people thought I couldn't spell - lol.
Your nude ZIA is beautiful! In fact, I took my inspiration from it this week. I hope you'll get a chance to see what I've come up with.
Do hope your boys' health will improve. I admire how you handle all that goes on in your life -- you are an inspiration! Have a great week.

  12. So weird - I commented here early early this AM, and saw the comment get posted, and now it is gone. Blogger is weird! Anyway - wanted to say Hi, again, and I am back to tangling after almost a 6 month interruption - thanks for the challenge!

  13. My link at #27 redirects back here - I guess my copier and paster was on the fritz this morning! I got it right at #38

    Sorry for any confusion!

  14. I love your string-less work. Another great challenge.

  15. Folks - I offer many apologies. The linky widget hates me. My first link bounced back here (#27), my attempt to fix it (#38) redirected to a post I made back in July. Insane.
I really think it is correct now, and I am backing slowly out of this post.....
I really only did one entry for this challenge - hope someone can clean up my clutter.
    So sorry

  16. I had to do a double take on the tangles you drew behind the nude because you made it look like it had always been part of the backdrop behind her! Fantastic my dear! I sure hope Artoo gets to feeling better - steam is used a lot in this house too b/c we get some bad sinus stuff here in the lovely damp, humid environment of Virginia.

  17. Thank you once more for giving us a challenge while you are facing so many. This one was great. Your nude tangle is fabulous, kind of like just letting it all go! Strings and clothes and all! Hope your boys feel better soon!

  18. I love your post, Laura. I hope the new exams for Artoo are successful. I found this weeks challenge very difficult and don't like my end result!

  19. Thanks for this wonderful challenge, Laura!

  20. This one was challenging, for sure. The first tangle was great and then I said, "Now what?" thanks for the stretching required to "git eR Dun"!

  21. It's been a long break from zentangling for me. This week I was determined to get it going and oh lucky me, did I love your challenge. this is right up my alley. thank you! health wishes for all of you and its always wonderful to get some fun time all to yourself, you need it.

  22. I'm finally getting my sample up for this challenge! What a crazy week!

I hope you're all feeling better. I think it's wonderful that you and Chewie have some together time, and it's even better that it's something super fun!

    Thanks for the challenge.

  23. Better late than never this week! I nearly didn't bother and thought it would be a shame. Thanks Laura for keeping these going in the midst of everything you're going through these days. Take care, super mom.

  24. I enjoyed this challenge so much that I've submitted 4 attempts. I'm going to look at some more of the other entries now. I don't think I'll time to comment on them all, but if they are all as great as the first few......

  25. I like not having a string once in a whole different take on how to approach the tile.

  26. Somehow I ended up with an eyeball pattern when I went stringless. Fun exercise, thanks for the challenge!

  27. I'm sorry, but I just realized I posted the wrong link ... #92 is the wrong one, #93 is the right one. Thanks (and sorry!)!

tangle me some zen, baby!!
