Weekly Challenge #201: "Moebius Syndrome Awareness Day 2015"

Moebius Syndrome Awareness day is Friday, January 24th.

For those of you who've been around since the beginning you know that my son, Artoo, has Moebius Syndrome.

For all my new friends - Moebius Syndrome is a congenital nerve disorder affecting cranial VI and VII nerves controlling the lateral movement of his face. Moebius is a spectrum disorder - so some cases are more severe than others.

We've been extremely lucky that Artoo's symptoms haven't been too difficult to adjust to.

Without going into too much detail about his condition; we deal with delayed developmental milestones, eating/feeding issues, club feet, low muscle tone - just to name a few things, and of course - being unable to deal with viruses and bacterias, he gets very sick. very fast.

Not a lot of people know about Moebius Syndrome, which is not surprising given the odds of having a child with Moebius is 1-2:1,000,000

yes.  you read right.  one million.  There's currently about 5,000 people on the planet with Moebius Syndrome

When Artoo was first born and we'd take him to the hospital for emergencies, we'd tell the doctors that he has Moebius Syndrome and they would say: "What's that?"  We've had to become the experts on the syndrome, and the advocates for our child, finding our way through the haze of the medical system.

i also want to stress here that Moebius Syndrome is
NOT A DISEASE, it's a disorder affecting his nerves.  The word disease implies that he is sick, or that he could 'get better'.   A lot of people assume that people who have Moebius Syndrome are mentally disabled because of their facial paralysis.  This is simply not true.  It does not affect intelligence, in fact - Artoo is really super smart.

He's now 4.5 years old reads just as well as his older brother.  He's incredibly smart, and he really loves to sing and dance.  It's not uncommon for him to sing out loud, at the top of his lungs... in places like the doctor's office... or the grocery store... or outside of Chewie's grade 1 class.  Much to everyone's delight.

If you ask him what he'd like to be when he grows up, he will tell you: A Palaeontologist.

To raise awareness for this disorder is this week's Challenge. Use the Moebius Syndrome Foundation's logo as your string, or create a moebius strip out of paper and tangle that... or some other awesome creative thing that i haven't thought of.

Here's two versions of the logo for you to work with.  You can print them or trace them or draw your own.

For those of you who remember this challenge from last year, please don't submit your tile from last year.  I'm going to send the link to the Challenge to the folks on my Moebius Syndrome support group on facebook, i'd love for them to see all your amazing artwork so that each and every one of them will know that they are not alone and that we are aware!!

If you are going to post your piece, also, to Instagram (@iamthediva), Twitter, or Facebook - please consider using the hashtag: #MSAD15

OH, also - the colour for MSAD is Purple, so if you want to incorporate purple into your tile, feel free.  Please consider wearing purple on Saturday, in support of Artoo - The first baby to attend a CZT Conference in utero! :D.

If you do, and you'd like to send me a photo, you can send it to lauraharmz (at) gmail (dot) com, or post it to the Challenge Facebook Page with hashtag #MSAD15

Thank you everyone for being so supportive of our family!! it means so much to us.

  7. Laura, I just love this challenge! Last year was the first that I became aware of Moebius Syndrome, thanks to you! It is so amazing, watching the progress and growth of lil' Artoo!!! He is so strong and yet I can always so the tenderness and love in his eyes!! I just love the pic of him, when he's resting his head on his hand. (I just want to squeeze those lil' cheeks of his) Too cute! Anyway, we are all here in support for Artoo and you and B-rad and Chewie!!! You are true inspiration!!! ((hugs)) Go Purple!!! :0) Annette

  8. Hi Laura, I have done this challenge with a lot of love in my heart, for your Family. I wanted to draw the logo by my self, and figured out how it can be done easy. I put a tutorial on my blog, and in mr. Linky of this post I linked that post too. I hope you don't mind. I wish you a great great purplish fantastic MSAD next Saturday, and my thoughts on that day will be with you and your beloved ones.

  9. Moebius Syndrome can take away the ability to I'm sending out a big smile to you and your family from everyone in the world who can't. Hugs ^_^

  10. Was not sure I was going to be able to get something done for this challenge but was able to. Artoo is looking like he is recovering well from his surgery. Best wishes to you and your family as you continue to deal with this disorder. Like your tile. Mine is pretty tame.

  11. I like the watercolor look on your moebius strip. And also the photo journey that you have given us over the years of the boys! That pic where Artoo has his chin in his hand is my fave!

  12. I always love adding some color to the mix. And what better color than purple. Thanks Diva for another great challenge and the pictures of Artoo are adorable.

  13. I'm Nana to a special needs kid. A giant gold star to you for all that you do because that's what you do when you become "that mom" for your kid. His first and fiercest advocate. Good for you for raising awareness for special needs kids.

  14. You raised my consciousness, Laura, thanks. I'd never heard of Moebius syndrome. I've only done this challenge once before, despite having heard of it for a long time, but this one seemed well worth it. I will wear purple on Sat. -- not technologically sophisticated enough to send a picture (took 4 tries to even do your link correctly) and, as I live in Nicaragua, I doubt it will do much to raise consciousness, but know that I am with you and your family and all others affected by Moebius Syndrome. Nor don't I understand the "select profile" options below, so I'll sign my name, Pat Floerke, and anyone can check my link in the Challenge #201.

  15. Hi.
I have been tangling for about 2-3 months and along with my friend (roshni) have embarked on my Zentangle journey. With 2015, we started participating in Zentangle challenge. When Roshni told me that she has decided to participate in your challenge this week and the theme, we got talking and wanted to do something special to spread awareness here in India. After a lot of thought process, we decided that we are going to tangle some tiles, make bookmarks & badges for spreading awareness. We are looking forward to donating them to someone suffering from the syndrome to help spread the awareness. Thanks for the challenge as it has helped us do our bit for the society. This is our first entry to your challenge & we are happy that our journey for your challenges has started with the nobel cause.

  16. I'm a newbie to actual participation in these challenges, though I've been lurking for months. I just wanted to thank you for your generousity shared here every week. I am in awe of you & your family, your talent & creativity and your commitment to what you do here while balancing life and motherhood. You are Badass! xoxo

  17. My first challenge!! Thanks for taking the time to do these. x

  18. Laura, you and your family's hope, courage, strength, and love are such an inspiration to all of us. You are truly amazing! I am grateful for your willingness to share your time, energy and creativity with us so often. ....Deanne B.

  19. As I have said before, I am amazed at the resilience of your family and I appreciate your time and efforts to sharing your life on this blog. Artoo is blessed to have a family like yours to be born into and I do believe that you are also blessed to have him in yours. Thank you again *hugs*

  20. Managed this challenge (having missed the deadline for #200!). This is my first one, but hope to do more. I hope Artoo likes it!

  21. Trying to get this online has pushed me into creating a blog! The second link (#117) will take you there - probably!

  22. For my first participation in a Zentangle challenge, I chose your! Yours, from France.

  23. The Diva truly challenged us to become aware of Moebius Syndrome. Thanks so much for the opportunity to learn about this rare condition. It makes you think just how much we depend on "reading" someone's face or controlling how much we allow our face to betray us. I've never even thought what it would be like to relate to someone who has no ability to smile, frown, etc.

  24. Am I last to the challenge for the Moebius syndrome week? I used a piece of craft paper in lighter than purple and made it a bit flowery. Thanks for challenges Laura and also the chance to see the progress that Artoo is making week after week.

tangle me some zen, baby!!
